Change in bicycle use in France 2019-2023, by urban area

Between 2019 and 2020, bicycle use in urban areas increased by 12 percent. There was less variation in sub-urban and rural areas. Indeed, traffic increased by only 2 percent in rural areas. However, during periods outside the containment due to the COVID-19 virus, the rate jumped in all areas with an increase of more than 30 percent in bicycle traffic in urban area. Cycling growth has slowed in cities since and has stagnated in suburban and rural areas.
